Why are midwest states such as Iowa and Ohio prominent forces in politics?

I am kind of new to politics and I am just wondering why potential presidential candidates feel that it's so important to win these states. California holds the highest population, but neither McCain nor Obama contested in that state. I understand that electoral votes play a role, but can't seem to grasp the whole process.
