Why are some of the most brilliant minds atheists?

Peter Atkins, Carl Sagan (one of my favorite cosmologists), Hermann Bondi, Francis Crick (discovery of DNA molecule), Richard Dawkins, Patrick Blackett, Sean Carroll, Steven Rose, Paul Dirac (anti-matter), etc. just to name a few.
