Is there a freeware recovery program that actually works?

I lost some files on a hard disk camcorder, and I've tried about 20 free recovery programs, and none of them have worked. Half can't do what I want them to, and the other half charge about $100 to use them, but advertise themselves as free. Is there any free program that I'm missing?
