Easy beef stew help!!!!!!?

My mum used to make this amazing beef stew, but i cant figure out how she made it. It had potatoes, carrots, beef, celery, and i am trying to figure out the sauce. She never used beef stock so any ideas? It was brownish but that could be cause of the meat. Do some people put mushroom soup in it? i really have no idea what it could be. Help!
